I - SCREENING AND ASSESSMENT RECORDINGS
How
do I record my clients
online?
You'll
need to create a link for your client
and
send it to them via email so they can access the recording program.
Click the "Online Recording" button on the main
page
of www.ComptonPESLonline.com. Select "Create a link for my
client". Follow the directions to fill out the form. You can
write
a message to your client something like "Dear _____, Click on
this link to take you directly to the Recording Program. Make
sure you allow yourself about 25 minutes (10 minutes for the Screening)
in a quiet setting to complete the recording process. Let me
know
if you have any questions." When you click the Submit button
the
link and your message will be automatically sent to your client's email
address. You should receive a duplicate email in your own inbox.
How
will I know when the client has finished the Screening or Assessment
Recording?
If you created a link for your client using your authorized email address
and your client's
correct email address and if your client correctly filled out Section I
Background Information of the recording program then you should receive
an email message with the subject: Screening Request Submission or
Analysis Request Submission. When you open the email you should be able
to see your client's background information in the text of the email.
What
should I do if my client said he made the recordings but I haven't
received any message in my inbox?
If you don't receive an email message indicating the Screening or
Analysis submission you may still be able to access your client's
recordings. Just access the Player on the main
page
of the website. Enter your email address and then your
client's
email address. If they were successful in completing the
recordings they should appear in the player directory. You
can
create a link for your client again just like you did earlier and tell
them to just fill out Section I Background Information and try sending
it again. They won't need to do any more recordings. Back to Top
How
can I record my clients online while they are in my office or I am in
their office?
You don't have to record your clients remotely. You may want
to
meet with them in person. They can still use the online
recording
program to complete the Screening or Phonological Assessment. To get
them started just click the "Online Recording" button on
www.ComptonPESLonline.com. Select "Access the Phonological
Assessment (or Screening) Recording". Type in your email address
(that's YOUR email address - not your client's). Then select the
recording type. The next screen will be Section I Background
Information. Either you or your client can fill this out.
You can control the recorder on each subsequent page if you
want to or you can allow your client to progress through the
program independently with you providing encouragement and prompting as
needed. Back to Top
What
should I do if my client is having difficulty using the recording
program? Prompt
your client to carefully read the instructions on the first page of the
assessment and to test their microphone using the test recorder.
If they continue to have difficulty please contact us at

What
do I do when my client has finished the course and it's time for his
re-evaluation?
The
recording process is exactly the same. When your client is ready to
make the
reassessment recordings you will need to create and then send a link to
the
recording pages just like you did for the initial Time 1
recordings. Click
on the “Recording”
button on the main page of the website. Then create a link for your
client this
time selecting the Reevaluation program. The link that is automatically
sent to
your client’s email inbox will take them to the Introduction
page of the
Reevaluation. There
is a shorter version
of the background information page where they will, most importantly,
enter their
email address which will ensure that you, as the teacher, will be able
to
retrieve their recordings. Your
client will then follow the same instructions to record the 66 stimulus
response words, which are divided between 2 pages, and the reading passage. The last page
will congratulate them for successfully completing the re-evaluation. Back to Top
How
long will my client's recordings be accessible?
You may access your client's recordings at anytime at
www.ComptonPESLonline.com. We
also encourage
you to download the recordings on to your computer. Back to Top
Can
I practice using the Screening and Assessment Recordings?
Yes. It

Do
I have to use the online recording program in order to use the online
Phonetic Transcription program?
You do not have to use the online recorder. You can use an audio
recorder or any recording software. However, the online recorder on
www.ComptonPESLonline.com has very good quality . Back to Top
How
do I begin the online Phonetic Transcription?
After you click on the "Transcription" button from the main
page of www.ComptonPESLonline.com and login you will see the Phonetic
Transcription Screen. The
player will be at the bottom of the screen. If you
have chosen to download the recordings to listen to them on a different
player
you can hide this player from view. Just click and drag on
the horizontal line above the player. You
will see the 66 stimulus
words and the reading passage above the player.
When you
click on a word it opens to reveal each phonetically transcribed sound
that is
tested in that word. Each
tested phoneme
is elicited at the word and sentence level. The sounds position in that
word or
its phoneme classification is also indicated.
For example, for the word
“horse” the initial consonant /h/ was tested
at the word-level and the sentence level.
The diphthong /or/ was tested at the
word-level and the
sentence-level. The
final consonant /s/
was tested at the word-level and the sentence-level. Back to Top
How do I
enter my client's error sounds?
Begin
playing back your client’s recordings
either on the player provided on this page or the player of your choice. There are 2 ways to enter
your client’s error
sounds:
Using
Language Specific Error Choices
The
language specific forms have typical error sounds already provided
for you to choose if appropriate. Just click on the error
sound to select. You
should
then see that selected error sound appear in the error sound box or
boxes.
Using
the Drop-Down IPA box
If
your client produced a sound that is not
represented as one of the language specific error choices. Just click on the blank
error sound box to
access a drop down grid of IPA symbols and choose the one you want. The drop down grid will
disappear and your
selected IPA symbol should appear in that error sound box. If you
change your
mind, just click on the box again to obtain the IPA symbols and make
your
correction. You can
also erase the error
sound you chose by clicking on the space in the upper left corner of
the drop
down grid. Back to Top
Why are there
4 error sound boxes?
Some
errors that your client makes will be represented by more than one
symbol. That’s
why
there are 4 error sound boxes in each row.
For example, if your client produced an
unaspirated /p/ you would
need to select the
/p/ symbol and the
symbol that represents unaspirated (=).
In
some cases you will need all 4 error sound boxes to display an error
sound
group such as a 3
element /s/ blend
produced with a vowel /ɛ/ inserted at the beginning commonly heard in
Spanish
accented English. Next
you will click on
the spontaneous count box to indicate that your client has made this
error one
time. The long white rectangular box is for typing in the context of
the error.
Make sure you close this window before continuing with other
transcription. Back to Top
What if I
make a mistake in my transcription?
You can click on the language specific error choices to change your
selection. Or you can click on the error sound box to obtain the drop
down menu of IPA symbols and then choose the one you want.
Also,
in the upper left corner of the IPA drop down grid there is a blank
area. Click on it to completely clear the error sound box. Back to Top
How
often do I need to save my work?
Save your work FREQUENTLY!The Save/Submit button is at the top of the Phonetic Transcription screen. We suggest saving your work every few minutes. Watch the green rolling bar when you click on the button. When it stops moving your work has been saved. Then you can continue on with your transcription.
You can save your work by clicking
on the save/submit button
as often as you want. If
you need to
leave the computer for a while or you want to finish the transcription
at a
later time make sure you save/submit your work before closing out the
program. When you
log back in the
transcription you have already completed will be saved. Back to Top
Where do I
transcribe my client's spontaneous speech errors during the
carrier sentences?
To document spontaneous speech errors click on any of the question mark
symbols
along the left margin of the Phonetic Transcription Screen. This will open up
a stairstep menu of phoneme classifications - consonants, vowels,
diphthongs,
blends and clusters. As
you move your
cursor over each classification the menu opens further to display
subcategories
for that class. Moving your cursor over these subcategories narrows
your search
even more to allow you to select the target phoneme of your choice as
well as
the word position of that phoneme. The last part of the menu displays
the pop-up
window where you will enter your client’s error sound. At
the top of this area you should see the target
sound. In the
middle of the box you
will see the error
sound boxes. Your client may make more than
one type of
substitution error for a particular sound.
Therefore we have provided 3 rows for 3
different potential error
sounds. When you click on the error sound box you will bring up the IPA
symbols. Just
select the IPA symbol that represents the error your client made. Back to Top
What if I
make a mistake in transcribing spontaneous speech sounds?
You can erase any symbol by clicking on it to bring up the IPA drop
down menu. Then click on the blank area in the upper left corner of the
menu. Or you can select another symbol to replace the one
chosen
previously. Back to Top
Why
are there
3 rows of error sound boxes?
Your client may make more than
one type of
substitution error for a particular sound.
Therefore we have provided 3 rows for 3
different potential error
sounds. When you click on the error sound box you will bring up the IPA
symbols. Just
select the IPA symbol that represents the error your client made. Back to Top
Where do I
transcribe my client's errors from the modeled reading
passage?
Remember
your client listened and repeated the
phrases from the first paragraph of the Reading
passage. Now it’s time to identify any of their
errors from the Modeled Reading Section.
After saving your transcription entries from the reading passage
go to the top of the screen and click on the link that says
“Continue”. This
will take you back to the Main Login
Screen. Enter
your password. Your client’s
name should still be there. Now select “Modeled”
for the session name. Their
language should still be accurately
identified. Log in.
How do I know
if my client made the same errors during the modeled
reading as he did during Time I?
Now you will see the first paragraph of
the reading passage. The
player is at
the bottom. When you click on the words in the boxes you will see your
client’s
errors from Time I in a lighter shade in the error sound box. Begin to listen to your
client’s recording
labeled Eval_Model. As
the recording
plays you will hear pauses between your client’s utterances. The pauses are when they
were listening to the
online teacher’s model.
If
you hear the same error in any given word just
click on that lightly shaded phoneme and it will darken. If you don’t
hear the error just leave it
alone. The program will know not to count it as a modeled reading error. If they made a different
error just click on
the appropriate language specific error choice or click twice on the
box itself
to obtain the drop down grid of IPA symbols.
When you have finished transcribing make sure
you save your work. Back to Top
How do I find
out the percent improvement between Time I and the
modeled reading?
After
you save your transcription work on the modeled reading
section click on the “Comparison”
link to view the results of your client’s modeled reading
pronunciation
ability. Enter your
password, select
Modeled for the session and then login. Direct your attention to the
right half
of the table at the top. You
will see
the number of errors your client made during their reading of the first
paragraph during Time I. Next
to that
you will see how many errors they made during the modeled reading
section. It
also shows the percent change which will help you in forming a
prognosis for
improvement for your client. For
example, if the client made 51 errors during Time I but only 10 errors during the
Modeled reading it indicates an 80
% improvement. Make a note of the percent improvement and then close
out this screen. DO NOT USE ANY OF THE LINKS ON THIS SCREEN. Return
to the Modeled reading portion of the
Phonetic Transcription screen and click on the
“Continue” link to return to the
login. Log back in and select Time I to continue with your
transcription.
Note:
If you want to view the Results Summary Screen again do the following
steps: 1)Click on "Phonetic Transcription" on the main page of the
website; 2)Enter username/password, select client, select "Modeled" for
session name; 3)Click on the "Comparison" link at the top of the
Modeled Reading screen. Back to Top
Where do I
transcribe my client's spontaneous speech errors during the
conversational speech sample?
The
next step in this process is to transcribe
any errors from your client’s conversational speech sample.
That’s from Section
4 of the evaluation. Click to highlight the recording in the player
labeled
Eval_Spont. You
will do all of
your transcribing for this recording using
the target phoneme locater menu. This
is
the same menu you used when transcribing your client’s
spontaneous speech errors
in the carrier sentences. This
is
accessed by clicking on any of the question mark symbols along the left
margin. Back to Top
How do I
document my client's grammar errors?
If
you hear a grammar error just click on any of
the exclamation marks along the right margin.
This will open up a text box where you can
type in the sentence
containing the grammar errors. Back to Top
I've finished
transcribing. What do I do next?
There
is one more thing you need to do to
prepare your client’s Personal Speech Analysis –
select a general frequency of
occurrence of errors. You
will do this by
using two screens. The Transcription Display Screen and the Pattern
Analysis. To view the Transcription Display screen click
on the “Transcription
Display” link at the top of the page.
This will take you to the Login page. Enter your password and
select Time 1. On
this page you will see the phonemes that your
client mispronounced. They
are
categorized and displayed on the left margin of this screen. If your client did not
make any errors for a
specific tested phoneme that phoneme will not appear in the left margin. The phoneme position and
frequency in the 66
stimulus words are also displayed.
For
example the consonant /p/ was presented in the initial position 4 times
and in
the final position 2 times. If you hover your cursor over the position
labels a
pop-up will appear displaying the words in which those target sounds
were
tested. For example: /p/ in the final position was tested in the 29th
word “mop” and in the Reading
passage in the word “up”.
On the Compton PESL phonemes are tested in
the initial and final positions for the 66 stimulus response words. However in this online
format we have
provided an opportunity to document the occurrence of errors in the
middle position
for the reading passage and spontaneous speech sections.
You
will now see all of
your client’s errors displayed in
the error boxes for each tested phoneme. After the error sound boxes
you will
see 4 columns. They
are identified as word
count, sentence count, reading count, and spontaneous count. They will contain numbers
that were derived
from the selections you made on the phonetic transcription
screen. If you hover
your cursor over the numbers in
the first 3 columns a pop-up will appear showing the exact words in
which your
client produced the error. The contexts of the spontaneous speech
errors, that
you typed in on the phonetic transcription screen, will all be
displayed in
this error context boxes.
You’ll
also find any grammar errors that you entered
in the grammar error box near the top of the page. Back to Top
How
do I attribute a frequency of occurrence for each error sound?
The only step left in completing your client’s analysis is
to attribute a general frequency to the occurrence of errors. The gray
rectangular box
labeled Frequency, on
the Transcription Display Screen, allows you to select a general
frequency of
errors produced for that specific target phoneme.
Remember
you
can look at the Pattern Analysis to help you in this decision. When you
are
ready to select the frequency just click on the gray rectangular box to
the
right of each error sound. Select
occasionally
,50%, usually, or always. Base
your
judgment regarding this selection of frequency on the recommendations
provided
at the Compton PESL workshop. If
you
make a mistake you can always click on the box again to make another
selection. If an
error has only occurred at the reading
or spontaneous speech level consider selecting
“occasionally”, as the frequency,
since the target sounds in these sections are not quantified. When you are finished
selecting the
frequencies it is very important to click on the save/submit button
again to
save these selections. After
the page
reloads your work is done. Back to Top
How do I
access my client's Pattern Analysis?
Click
on the link at the top of the Transcription Display Screen labeled
"Pattern Analysis". Or you can access your client's Pattern Analysis
anytime you want by looking under "Reports and Tools" on the
main page of www.ComptonPESLonline.com. Back to Top
How
can I use the Pattern Analysis to help me make a decision regarding
frequency of occurrence of errors?
The Pattern analysis is an organized summary of the phonetic data you
recorded on
the Phonetic Transcription Screen.
The
Compton PESL online program does this for you. Some teachers find it
helpful to
look at the Pattern Analysis side by side with the Transcription
display screen
as they perform the final step to preparing their client’s
personal speech
analysis. To view both screens just right click on the Pattern Analysis
link at
the top of the page and open it in
a new
window. Now
reposition the screens by clicking
and dragging to resize, as necessary, so you can view both screens at
the same
time. Back to Top
What
do the
colored ticmarks represent?
The
Pattern Analysis displays all of the tested phonemes and the occurrence
of
those phonemes in the 66 stimulus words.
Your client’s errors are shown with
corresponding colored ticmarks indicating
context and frequency. The
red
marks
indicate stimulus words in isolation
black
= stimulus words in context; blue =
reading and green
= spontaneous speech. For example:
If a client produced an unaspirated /p/ 2
times at the word level there will be 2
red ticmarks
||; 2
times at the sentence level will have 2 black ticmarks ||; 3
times at the reading level will have 3 blue ticmarks ||| and twice at
the
spontaneous speech level will be indicated by 2 green
ticmarks ||.. Back to Top
Not
all of my
client's errors are on the Pattern Analysis.
Why not?
Please
keep in mind neither the Pattern Analysis
nor the Personal Speech Analysis display
errors your client made in the MIDDLE position of words. You can review those
errors whenever you want
by looking back at the Transcription Display screen.
You may also want to review the contexts in
which your client’s spontaneous speech and grammar errors
occurred by looking
at the Transcription Display Screen.
One of the benefits of
this online format is that all of your client’s recordings,
phonetic
transcription, pattern analysis and personal speech analysis are
available for
you to see at any time. You
can select any of the
buttons on the home page of the website to retrieve this information. Back to Top.
Can I print out the
Pattern Analysis?
Yes. Just click File and
Print on your browser. You may want to look at Print Preview
first and
adjust the scale to your preference before printing as the scale may
vary depending on the browser. Back to Top
How
can I create a Pattern Analysis Class Summary Form?
The
individual speech analyses of multiple
clients can be collected and viewed in a single chart to make it easier
to compare their similarities and differences. To creat this
chart click on the Reports and Tools button on the main page of
www.ComptonPESLonline.com. After entering your username and password,
Control-Click to highlight the clients whose analyses you would like in
the chart. Select Time I as the session and Login. Each
column represents one client, and it becomes obvious that some error
sounds are shared by all, some by two or three, and a few occur only
for each individual. Check out the video titled "Compton PESL Online
Summary Form" under the About>Videos section on the main page
ComptonPESLonline.com.
How do I
access my client's Personal Speech Analysis?
Now
your client’s Personal Speech Analysis is
complete. The link
to view it is at
the top of the Transcription Display Screen and the Phonetic
Transcription Screen. Or
you can access it at any time by clicking on the "Personal Speech
Analysis" on the main page of www.ComptonPESLonline.com. All
of your
client’s error sounds and frequencies are now filled in for
you. You can email
this to your client or print it
out and place it in your client’s program notebook. When your client views it
online they can
click on the Phonetic Symbols table. This has an added feature
of an audio
recording of each target phoneme
in the context of words. If
they open
this link in a separate window they can place each screen side by side
to
assist them in having a better understanding of which of their sounds
were
mispronounced. Back to Top
Can I print
out the Personal Speech Analysis?
Yes. Just click File and
Print on your browser. You may want to look at Print Preview
first and
adjust the scale to your preference before printing as the scale may
vary depending on the browser. Remember, you will need a color printer
to see the colored ticmarks. Back to Top
How do I send
the Personal Speech Analysis to my client?
You
can email the Personal Speech Analysis to your client. Just click
on the "Email Link" at the top of the Transcription Display Screen or
the Phonetic Transcription Screen. After logging in you will see a

Do
I do anything differently when I'm ready to transcribe my client's
reevaluation recordings ?
Note: See Section I, Chapter 5
of this Tutorial for a review on how to RECORD your client’s
speech after they have finished the PESL course.
When
transcribing your client’s re-evaluation recordings (Time 2)
You will
be able to refer to the errors made on the initial evaluation
or Time 1 and simply select any errors that are still present. To
begin the transcription process of your client’s Time
2 recordings click on the “Phonetic Transcription”
button on the main page of www.ComptonPESLonline.com
Enter your username and
password. Since
your client is already
in the system search for their name in your client directory and click
to
highlight. As long as it has not changed their email
address should then appear
in the next row. Then
select Time
2. Their specific
language should
automatically highlight for you. Now
click
login.
The
player at the bottom of the phonetic
transcription screen should contain all of your client’s
recordings. Use the
scroll bar to locate the reevaluation
recordings. They
will be labeled Reeval
1-30, Reeval 31-66 and Reeval Read .
Just
click to highlight and the player will begin automatic playback. As
with the
Time 1 recordings you may choose to download the Time 2 recordings and
play them on a different player. As
you click on
each word it will widen to reveal all of the phonemes tested. Your client’s
errors from Time I will be in
the error boxes in a lighter shade.
If,
when listening to the reevaluation recordings, you hear the same error
produced
then just click on that phoneme and it will darken.
Just leave it alone if they don’t
make that
error. If they made
a different error
click in the box to obtain the IPA symbols. Or choose a language
specific
error. Remember
to transcribe any spontaneous speech
errors from the carrier sentences using the phoneme locater represented
by any of the question marks along the left margin.
And make a note regarding any grammar errors
just like you did in Time 1. Save
and
submit this page when you are finished. Back to Top
